Tale of two Kashyaps: Gangs of Wasseypur gets ripped off

Tale of 2 Kashyaps: Gangs of Wasseypur gets ripped offBy Subhash K Jha

We’ve heard of movies being cloned when they become hits. But in what may be able to rank because the first of its kind, Anurag Kashyap’s unreleased Gangs Of Wasseypur which does Mario Puzo’s The Godfather within the coalmines of Dhanbad, have been allegedly made into another film by another director who coincidentally owns the similar surname as Anurag.

Ajay Kashyap is a veteran director of 14 potboilers beginning with the Sanjay Dutt-Anita Raj starrers Jaan Ki Baazi in 1985.

Just why and the way he decided to direct a movie at the coalmines of Dhanbad just when Anurag Kashyap was in the middle of putting together the 6-hour 2-part film in accordance with the mafia-like operations of the coalmines in Dhanbad Bihar, is anyone’s guess.

To Anurag’s dismay The Coal Mafia is being rush-released in May, a month sooner than Gangs Of Wasseypur.

Says an actor from Kashyap’s film, “We were all horrified once we hear about this other Kashyap also doing a quickie at the coalmines of Dhanbad, and releasing it before our film.

Anurag wasn’t conscious about this kind of project until someone brought it to his notice. But the excellent news is that the one thing which the 2 directors share is the surname Kashyap.

That apart they belong to totally different schools of thought and inventive sensibilities. ”

While Ajay Kashyap the director of The Coal Mafia chose to not respond to questions about the suspicious likeness of his film to Anurag Kashyap’s, an actor from The Coal Mafia spoke on condition of anonymity.

“It can be very unethical to mention anything against the film before its release. All I WILL BE ABLE TO inform you in this day and age is that the treatment of the theme of the coal mafia in Ajay Kashyap’s film is precisely commercial.

Ajay is a superb humanbeing But being an excellent humabeing and an even filmmaker are not the similar thing. The Coal Mafia is plotted like a regular formula film.

However to mention that the resemblances between the movies of the 2 Kashyaps are purely coincidental could be naïve. The speculation is to pre-empt Anurag’s film at the same theme. ”

Interestingly both the Kashyaps were denied permission to shoot on actual location in Dhanbad. In Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur Varanasi needed to masquerade as Dhanbad. Anurag Kashyap shot his film at the Dhanbad coalmines in Varanasi. Ajay Kashyap needed to recreate Dhanbad within the outskirts of Mumbai.

Anurag Kashyap chose to be ironical in regards to the blatant hijacking of his film.

Said Anurag, “I am happy for him (Ajay Kashyap). His film is ready the coal mafia. Coal is simply part of my film. He has made an epic whereas mine is solely an easy film. All of the best to him. ”
